Open Thread: What Gadgets are in Your Backpack?

Post image for Open Thread: What Gadgets are in Your Backpack?

Some people travel with a backpack (or two, or luggage) filled with gadgets and gizmos.  Others can go months on the road without a single thing that requires electricity.  What about you?

What gadgets do you pack with you when you travel?

Do you bring a laptop or netbook?  An iPod or two?  Enough camera equipment to start a Hollywood production?

My Kindle. While I haven’t had the chance to test it out overseas yet, it has come in handy at home and at one stage of my year long trip in 2009 I had books to the weight of 6 kilos in my bag!! While I understand that was overkill and keeping in mind that was for 2 people, it will be such a relief to not have to carry around that dead weigh anymore

My iPhone. I used to travel with a nokia and an iPod Touch. Since merging the two I haven’t looked back, and I get to use some of the features on the iPhone that the iPod Touch doesn’t have (compass, 3G when there’s no wifi, Augmented Reality apps in conjunction with camera etc). The fact that I can encode TV shows to iPhone format is handy when I dont have …..

….My MacBook Pro. I was on the road a lot last year and this came in so handy for writing blog posts, skype and watching TV series in bed. I didn’t take it on my recent 10 day trip to Thailand, but I did miss having it.

Planning a digital nomad lifestyle to begin in June, so I’m really interested to read what others necessities are. I only want to travel with a 35L pack so really need to crunch down on needs vs wants!
I’m currently think about packing: 13″ macbook pro, iphone (though haven’t looked into the costs of using this OS yet so may scrap it), ipod nano, kindle or paperback (yet to decide, I prefer paper but the weight and space is def an issue), compact camera… what am I missing?

I can’t really help with the worldwide phone service, I always turn my iPhone to airplane mode with WiFi on for internet. I don’t make many calls even when I’m home so I don’t care about cell service. Keep in mind you can always use Skype.

A 35L pack will be tight. I use a Kelty Redwing 3100 (around 50 liters) and can certainly fill it up easily. I’m still trying to take less every trip I go on.

Have you thought of using your iPhone as an ebook reader? A friend of mine downloaded an app that allows that and I think he can access kindle books. You also have the all new iPad.
Depending on where you go as well a 35L is huge. I went to China in August with a similar sized pack, took a 10″ laptop, books paperback, phone, iPod Touch, DSLR and compact digital camera, and still had space left over to fill up with souvenirs. I’m planning to do a 12 month trip in 2012 in the same sized pack. Best of luck to you!
